GRAMMAR
I) SAXON GENITIVE (pg. 130)
El genitivo sajón es una construcción gramatical en inglés que se utiliza para indicar posesión. Para formar el genitivo sajón, usamos el apóstrofo seguido de una s ('s).
En español, la posesión va delante del poseedor: El perro de MI hermana. pero en inglés el poseedor va delante de la posesión: My sister's dog.
Ejemplo: La casa de María es grande = María’s house is big.
Usamos genitivo sajón cuando...:
1. El poseedor es una persona. Ejemplo: John‘s house is near.
2. El primer elemento es un animal. Ejemplo: the bird‘s wings = las piernas del pájaro.
3. El primer elemento es un país/ciudad/pueblo… Ejemplo: Spain‘s monuments are very nice.
Cuando el poseedor acaba de en -s, hay dos son las posibilidades:
1. James’ dog is lovely
2. James’s dog is lovely
Si el poseedor está en plural, y por tanto, acaba en -s, sólo ponemos el apóstrofo, no la -s:
– My parents’ house = la casa de mis padres
– My brothers’ children = los hijos de mis hermanos = brothers es plural regular
Compara:
– My brothers’ children = los hijos de mis hermanos
– My brother’s children = los hijos de mi hermano
¿Ves la diferencia? En el segundo ejemplo, sólo hay un hermano, mientras que en el primero, más de uno.
